    Thailand, where gambling is largely prohibited, is considering legalizing online gambling to tackle its thriving black market. Studies estimate that billions of dollars flow through illegal gambling platforms annually, with little benefit to the state.

    

    Proposals for legalization include strict licensing requirements, high taxes, and robust consumer protection measures. Supporters argue that regulated online gambling could generate significant revenue for public projects and tourism promotion. Opponents, however, warn of the social consequences, particularly among vulnerable populations.

    

    The government has launched a public consultation process, with a decision expected in 2024.
